6.2 Access Control

Access control for industrial networks is the important area of determining and enforcing who (or what device or system) has access to the system assets, such as the HMI, the process control network, the controllers, servers, etc. And, if a person, device, or system is allowed to “touch” these system assets, access control specifies:

• What is their authorization level?

• What data or settings may they change, delete, add, etc.?

• How will this be controlled and enforced?
